One Month Old

Nicolas Scott is one month old tomorrow! This month has gone quickly and very slow all at the same time :-)

Nic now weighs over 8 pounds (I'll get the exact stats tomorrow at his appointment) and eats like a champ. I'm trying to keep up with the milk, but have to supplement every once in a while. He gets quite frustrated eating directly from me, so I'm pumping everything and feeding it to him through a bottle. He's taking 4 ounces at a time. Last week he was acting as if he was hungry every hour to hour and a half, would chug a bottle, and then projectile vomit about three to four feet across the room. After taking Nic to the doctor, she told us that babies just need to suck all the time. This was news to us as Nora did not have this instinct until quite a bit later in her life. It's amazing how different the two can be (other than their appearance that is).

Nic is waking up one or two times during the night right now. Brian is taking the first feeding and I'm doing the second. Nic is also a lover of the Miracle Blanket (did anyone hear the reference to the Miracle Blanket on Brothers and Sisters on Sunday night?).

Nic's favorite position at the moment is in the Moby carrier (the big long piece of fabric that is intricately wrapped around me and then he is placed inside right against my chest). He stays quite calm while in there. He also likes the sling when we are on the go. The sling is much more convenient to get him in and out, but he seems to prefer the Moby which wraps him much tighter. We have a mini-Moby for Nora to wear and carry around her babies!

Nicolas loves to take a bath. He kicks and screams when he's naked and cold until placed in the tub. We have one of those baby bath tubs that has a sling inside that he can lay in and be almost completely covered with water. He calms down the second he hits the water and seems annoyed when I take him out of the bath.

All in all, the first month of having our new family member around has been wonderful. I was quite worried about being able to love another baby as much as I love Nora, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is just like a colleague told me, when you have another baby, you simply grow another heart! On the other hand, I was told a funny analogy for how Nora must feel: It is like bring home your lover and saying to your spouse, "This is my lover and he is going to live with us now. You'll get used to him in time and eventually come to love him just as much as me!"

One month old and I haven't held him yet!!! How did the grandparents of pioneers survive? At least there are airplanes - - now if the weather will just cooperate I can finally get to hold Nicolas and squeeze Nora!!!!
